floral tips
June is the height of wedding season – beautiful weather, beautiful outdoor backdrop and an endless array of summer flowers to make the most beautiful wedding flower arrangements. But with all the flowers to choose from and all the floral elements to consider, it can be difficult to know where to start. Here are some basic questions to ask yourself to guide you toward your perfect wedding flowers within any budget.
Establish a Vision.
What kind of wedding are you having? Classic elegance? Bohemian? Minimalist? Over-the-top romantic? Considering your wedding style vision will help you narrow down flower choices, colors and your overall wedding flower style.
Work the Room.
Think of your wedding ceremony and reception site as a blank canvas on which your florist will create a wedding flower masterpiece. Is there wallpaper at the venue that may clash with your wedding flowers? Is there a garden on the property already so you won’t need many floral accents? Are you starting with a venue that is empty and will need a lot of work? Taking the spatial and design elements of your wedding reception and ceremony venue into account will help you figure out what you really need from your wedding florist.
Mind Mother Nature.
Timing is everything with flowers, so pick seasonal flowers for your wedding bouquet to ensure against wilting and to keep costs down. June is typically humid and warm in the Northeast, so consider hardier flowers like zinnias, dahlias, sunflowers, lilies and hydrangeas, which won’t wilt. Avoid more delicate flowers like gardenias, lily of the valley, tulips and wildflowers for your summer wedding bouquet, and keep all wedding centerpieces and bouquets out of direct sunlight.
All About the Dress.
Since your wedding dress is truly the centerpiece of the show, the style, color and feel of the dress dictate the wedding flower bouquet – is the dress ornate or simple, white or cream, classic or contemporary? Figuring this out will help your florist create your perfect wedding bouquet, which sets the tone for the rest of the wedding flowers.
Stop and Smell the Roses.
Make sure to choose flowers that aren’t too fragrant for your wedding arrangements – you don’t want to be sneezing down the aisle, attract bees (if outdoors) or aggravate your guests’ allergies.
Size Matters.
Be sure your wedding bouquets aren’t too heavy or too hard to carry. Also be sure to choose the bridal and wedding party’s bouquets with a consideration to style of dress and body shape. A delicate bouquet will get lost against an elaborate ruffled dress, and a small bride will be overshadowed by a massive, dramatic cascading wedding flower arrangement.
Follow these tips and you’ll be sure to have a wedding that’s a floral success!
