floral tips
We may be in the dog days of summer, but August is the prime month to plan and plant your fall vegetable garden and prepare your flower garden for the following spring. Fall is an often-overlooked season for planting, but it is a wonderful opportunity to breathe new life into your late summer garden and celebrate the beauty and drama of the fall months.
Spring Ahead.
Late August is the prime time to plant your spring bulbs and seeds, ensuring that when the weather warms, the ground will give rise to a beautiful garden of fresh spring flowers. Impatiens, Petunia, Pansies, Zinnia and Sweetpea are lovely choices for spring, as well as Freesia and Gladiolus for bulbs.
Veg Out.
There’s still a wonderful window of opportunity in August to grow a vegetable garden in time for the bounty of harvest. Choose fast growing vegetables like peas, spinach, leaf lettuces, broccoli, chives and radishes, which will mature in about a month. Planting vegetables during the late summer is an excellent solution for keeping the fertility of your garden soil at its peak.
Other vegetables such as leeks, turnips, swiss chard, cauliflower and early carrots can be planted in mid-august as well, and will reach maturity in approximately 60 days – just in time for Halloween!
Celebrate the Season with Colorful Containers.
By August, container plantings are often on their last breath – what a wonderful opportunity to revamp your container garden to reflect the colors and drama of the fall season. Pansies, mums and asters are always popular choices, but there are plenty of other unique fall flower options that can stand up to the cool autumn and early winter months.
- Heuchera – purple and frosty silver coral bells
- Sedum – deep pink and magenta clusters
- Sweet Potato Vine – bronze vines
- Bugleweed – deep purple leaves
