  • During the month of November, consider constructing or purchasing a "Mulch Bin." One can be purchased at a local home supply store or on the internet. It can be constructed of a wire mesh material and four metal posts. It can be any size, but 4' high x 4' long x 4' deep is a good dimension to begin; Allow one side to be removable. Once constructed, small twigs, grass clippings, leaves and if one wants to be really "adventurous" food scraps can also be added. Be forewarned that food leftovers can attract rodents. During the winter and early spring, the debris decomposes into a rich compost which is ideal for the garden. If you would like further information, please contact us.

  • During the months of September, October, and November if you have a terrace or a single family home, one of the most important maintenance issues a homeowner can do is spread Mulch, shredded wood chips, in the planting beds. Mulch provides insulation around the roots of the plants to protect them from freezing during the winter. Some of the best mulches are Cedar Mulch and shredded Pine Bark Mulch. If you choose to do it yourself, these can be purchased at your local garden center or home supply store, or your landscape maintenance company can provide this service.

  • During the fall, evergreens such as, Rhododendrons, Azaleas, Hollies, and Spruces should be fertilized with Holly-Tone, a slightly acidic fertilizer, which also can be purchased at your local garden center or home supply store.
