floral tips
Spring is finally in full bloom, and the warm, sunny weather and April showers have made our outdoor spaces greener and greener by the week. But there are still some things we can do to help our landscapes get in shape for summer.
Here are 5 easy landscaping tips to help put the finishing touches on what Mother Nature has already started and ensure you have a beautiful landscape all summer long.
Prevent pest damage.
Aphids and garden pests love spring weather, so control pests now by checking plants often for curled or poorly forming leaves, which are a sign of aphids. Get rid of garden pests by spraying plants frequently with a strong jet of water or insecticidal soap.
Prepare flowerbeds for the long-haul.
Garden bed soil loses most of its nutrients over the winter. Refresh your soil back to a healthy level by spreading a layer of compost across the surface. The compost will help your garden beds keep weeds down, help keep the a constant temperature and retain moisture around the plants.
Prune, prune, prune.
To shape and strengthen mature trees, prune in the spring and summer. For hedges and evergreens, it’s best to prune earlier, when they begin new growth.
Give your lawn some TLC.
Spring is a great time to begin major lawn improvements. Dig out weeds, remove any mold, and rake matted-down patches. If your lawn is patchy, apply sod or fertilizer to stimulate growth.
Whack weeds before they grow.
Start weed control measures in your garden now. Look for garlic mustard, buckthorn and honeysuckle and remove them as soon as possible so they don’t spread during the fertile spring and early summer months.
